Safety Concern: Use of safety glasses instead of safety goggles under face shield when using / transporting liquid chemicals.
Hazard: In several recent industry incidents chemicals have splashed under the face shield and safety glasses resulting in chemical eye injuries.
Solution: Require safety goggles to be used in conjunction with a face shield while using or transporting chemicals.
Elaboration: Company dependant practices in place may allow safety glasses to be worn under a face shield while using or transporting chemicals. Several recent industry incidents have occurred where the liquid chemical container was open and dropped a few inches above the floor. This caused the chemical to splash upward underneath both the face shield and safety glasses. The chemical entered through the gap between the face and safety glasses and made contact with the injured person’s eye(s). Had safety goggles been worn instead of safety glasses the gap would had been sealed and the chemical would not had made contact with the eye(s).
